So I had a duck egg go rotten and explode in my hand in my kitchen. The stench was unbelievable!

So now when I pick up a duck egg I give it a sniff test. I haven’t had any others smell totally rotten but even fresh eggs smell swampy when compared to a fresh chicken egg.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I just scarred for life from the exploding egg event?

Mine do... one of the reasons I rarely use/eat duck eggs. :sick
I have a super sensitive sniffer and my girls live on a pond not in a run so I don’t know if that factors in. When I find eggs now I wash them
Off and blow them out. I can use them for confetti eggs or fill them with plaster to put in nest boxes.

Very interesting question! I really would like to know how my duck's eggs smell under all that poop which the ducks use to deter me from collecting 'em.
I have to wash each and every egg with warm water and a scrubbing sponge because my ducks lay and poop at the same time.
After cleaning the eggs smell like - nothing, a bit of chalk. (?) - But definitely no swampy smell or taste.
