do barred plymouth rocks change colors? we bought 26 of them at a day old and have grown them out to a pretty good size but today it dawned on me that a few were missing. now we only have 20 barred rocks. not strange i suppose, sometimes i guess chickens do go missing...

except that we're not missing any chickens!

we had a total of 45 chickens in that pen:
26 barred rocks
09 buff orpingtons
03 red sexlinks
04 black australorps
03 black sexlinks

no we have 45 chcikens in that pen:
20 barred rocks
09 buff orpingtons
03 red sexlinks
13 black chickens that we can't tell apart....

any ideas? i don't really care which ones are which but it just seems odd that we have 6 less barred rocks than we used to and 6 more black chickens than we used to...

lol

Females are darker than males, but they don't turn solid black....strange.

ok, australorps will be solid black, black sex-links will have a red tint to their feathers, but BRs should still be BRs!! If it was the other way and you had extra BRs, you probably got cheated on your black sex-links (male BSLs are barred).

They must have grabbed some from the wrong bin??

i've been thinking about it all day and all i can come up with is that maybe they did grab some chicks from the wrong bin and because there was so many of tehm we just didn't notice before now. it's hard to imagine that i would notice yesterday but not before that but it doesn't change the fact that i have more black chickens than i thought. lol
