Do bobcats kill more than they can eat?

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to have discovered Backyard Chickens, having raised them for 38 years or so on our small family farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains, CA. If anyone knows about bobcat behavior, I'd love an answer to the above question, having just lost 8 chickens and 3 ducks to a seemingly wanton bobcat attack. My husband and son saw the animal, so there's no doubt who created the carnage. Please see my post from yesterday here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...omething-roosters-and-hens-lefty-for-dead/30/. Scroll down to the last entry on that page (4). It was a response to someone who said that bobcats do not kill more than they can eat. Our recent flock was mostly Dominiques and Delawares plus a really beautiful Araucana rooster, now deceased. Still grieving, but also excited about learning more here about raising chickens.

I beg to differ. I had a bobcat kill 5/7 hens Christmas morning 2012. Only one hen was missing (eaten). 2 were up in the loft above the coop and 2 were still in the coop. The bobcat was sleeping it off when I found him.

Glad you joined us!

Halimah please do check out the predator and coops section forums., so you can prevent further bobcat, etc. massacres. They will be back to see if you have any leftovers.

Welcome to BYC. I'm glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry about your losses to the bobcat. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. Sometimes bobcats definitely kill more than they can eat. There is a good article on predator proofing your chickens at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in protecting your flock.
