Do chickens drink at night?

Do city chickens drink Manhattans, and south Texas chickens drink Margaritas? Northern California chickens drink pinot noir? Massachusetts chickens drink Sam Adams beer.

by that reasoning, i can only conclude that seattle chickens must drink grande mocha lattes when we're not looking.................

i do hear them down there (they're still in a dog crate in my family room) scratching around and playing at night.... hmmm.....

seriously, though, i'm glad for this post because i've been fretting about food/water in the coop/run/both for our girls, too... floor space is limited in our coop, so i think just to cover our bases, i'm going to put small feeder/waterer in the coop with the big ones in the run (and i plan to put the run feeder away in the shed at night - there're rats around! ewww!). because of water spillage issues inside the coop, i'm going to use a gallon waterer and set it on bricks inside a kitty litter box to contain spills.​

Didn't you order an auto door also? I would love both of them. How are they working out for you?

They are fantastic! It is really great not having to open and close the door. We had a bit of a false start, as my husband didn't order the one with the outside sensor and cable the first time, so if you used the interior coop light at night, the door opened! With the coop cam, I can check to make sure the door is operating as it should, also. I know it's stupid, but I like to SEE that the door is open or closed.

I can even see if they need their food or water filled.

I usually have the sound turned up on the cam, so I can hear if anything is wrong. Two weeks ago, I heard them screaming, in a way that told me something very bad was happening. I went running/hobbling out of the house bare foot, yelling that I was coming, and interrupted a hawk attack. Luckily, she only lost a huge pile of feathers and not her life. If I hadn't come out when I did, I'm sure the second attack would have been successful. They have been in lockdown ever since.

Bebe laid her first pullet egg in the coop this morning, and I saw one of her curious sisters was pecking at it! So, I went right out and saved that egg!

The girls have been really restless as well as noisy today, due to beginner egg laying. I added a new nest box, too, which they have been checking out. It's been really fun to watch them all morning and I've been taking pictures with the coop cam and sending them to my husband, at work, so he won't feel like he is missing out on everything!

Although neither is a necessity, they are really handy and the cam is also fun. Most of all, if I have to go to the hospital again or end up in a wheel chair again, I know that coop door won't get left open. My girls will be safe.

Now Jim wants to get another cam for the run!
