Do chickens like grass?

My silkies love grass but hate to walk in it because it bends the feathers on their feet up. So I'm always pulling up half our lawn to give to them as a treat

I suggest you watch the movie 'Chicken Run'. It's a claymation that came out in the early 2000's, by the same guys who created the 'Wallace and Gromett' movies. I laugh every time I think about that movie.
Took my grandson to the theater (he called it 'The Movieator') to see it when it first came out. He loved chickens after that. Bought the DVD of it and have seen it on Direct TV a few times.
The WHOLE point of the movie is that the girls want to feel grass under their feet. They are kept in a 'war camp/Hogens Heros' kind of atmosphere and ALL they dream/scheme about is to get OUT and feel grass under their feet. Then there's their owner, the evil Mrs. Twittey, who decides to turn all the girls into Pot Pies?!?!?!

My flock has a fenced yard attached to their coup. Their yard is nothing but dirt, because over the years they've really worked it over, but it gives them room to scratch and run about. Every evening I let my flock out to freerange for about an hour and a half before dark. They know the routine and are all gathered up at the gate when I go to let them out. When I open the gate they all come rushing out in glee!!! Just like school kids let out for recess!!!! LOL It's so much fun for them (and me, I love watching them as they enjoy the grass/weeds/seeds/bugs and freedom). Then as dark sets in, they all go back to their coup, that is.....they put themselves up.

When I mow my yard, clean my garden or pull weeds, I gather it to throw into their yard during the day, as a treat. They eat some of it, but mainly they enjoy having something new to scratch at and investigate. Chicken do get bored, just an any penned creature. The more green plants your girls get the tastier your eggs will be!!! If your flock only gets commercial feed their eggs will have a more commercial taste.

I use commercial feed as my staple feed,...... then add free range, scratch, alfalfa pellets, above mentioned grass/garden/weeds, kitchen scraps as treats/supplements. This summer I started learning about sprouting whole seeds/grains, so this winter when Mother Nature is asleep, my girls will have something fresh to enjoy.

Everyone should be able to walk in the grass, bare footed!!!!!

I killed my lawn (hate lawns, they don't belong in the desert) but when I have grass growing as weeds, sometimes I pull clumps for them to eat. I hold the clump still and they pluck bits off the end. It's best to wear gloves, because sometimes they get a little too close to my hands, and those beaks are sharp! They like it though, and I like having them all clustered around me.

DH is a landscaper. Once or twice a week he brings home a bag of grass from one of his "organic" or untreaed clients.
