Do Chickens Love??

Wile E. :

No, chickens don't love. Chickens are about as smart as a 60 watt light bulb. When it is burned out. You can love your chickens, but if you died in the chicken coop they would eat you. Animals are not people and even dogs and cats that seem to know whats up don't see the world the way we do.

As for why they stayed in the coop; where would they go? At night they roost, and they usually roost in the same place. Did you think because you left the door open they were going to go bar hopping? Chickens roost at night. If you had gone there during the day they probably wouldn't have been there. And not because they don't love you, but because they have things to do in the daylight.

This made me laugh. I have to agree. I love my chickens but I know they would not hesitate to peck my eyeballs out if they got the chance.

I don't know if my chickens love me back but I tell them every morning to have a great day and every night I tuck them in & tell them I love them. As for your question.....people free range chickens with no fencing and they come back...might not be love but maybe loyal!!

I believe that most animals are capable of their own form of love/affection; chickens included. When it comes to them sticking around, though, I think that's more of a case of them knowing what and where "home" is - a place they feel that they can safely roost for the night, the place that they know has food and water for them whenever they need it, and the place they can shelter in bad weather. Even wild animals will generally stick to a particular territory for as long as it provides everything that they require to survive (and thrive). Chickens are no different in that regard, I don't think.

Thanks for the answers

I think every animal knows where they need to stay in order to stay alive. I just have so many hawks and coyotes around my house that I never let them out of the coop and the door had been open for hours! The last thing I expected to see was all of them still in there!

I'd like to think my girls love me, but if I'm honest with myself, I am probably just "Bearer of Treats and Food." A few of them are very affectionate though and will jump in my lap for snuggles and hugs. Makes me feel good!

That's exactly what mine do! I just went out there and my EE pullet, Pumpkin, walked up on my arm to get me to hold her because I was filling the water and ignoring her

My lavender orpie Daisy always runs towards me when she sees me. OK, food and water helps. But it is sooo kewl when I have neither and enter their pen to have her walk up to me, let me pet her and pick her up.
If they "can't feel love" feeling trust is pretty darn close to me!

My Polish Tophat/Silkie mix, Sandy, is the most curious thing ever! She always has to know what is going on! When we were cleaning the coop, we blocked off the opening to the coop with a piece of wood and you could see her trying to poke her head through

She says hi to everyone, too. She walks up to you and clucks and she melts when you pick her up.
