Fall is the most common time for an adult molt, but that can extend to early as late summer, or late as late winter.

While some will have a juvenile molt (which isn't a full, drop all their feathers and looks like chickens exploded, molt), most will molt right around 18 months of age, and every 12 months after that. Feathers are mainly protein, so increasing protein in the diet during molt can help accelerate growth of replacement feathers.
