Do chickens nap?

Chickens are WAY to find good at hiding illnesses. It is hard to say specifically but tail down, hunched up shoulders, neck pulled in and feathers puffed up say reproductive issues is most likely. Add her appearance to her breed and I would GUESS either internal laying or salpingitis.

Can you cage her separate so you can check her droppings for amount, consistency and color? It will also allow you to monitor her feed intake.

I just tried to catch her she still has her quickness. She mainly tried to stay next to the alpha rooster but would run in any direction to escape me. She pooped while I was out there too, it was diarrhea. She did eat a few bites of food and scratch while I was out. I will try again in a little while since the alpha rooster started growling at me...I growled back...

Ours nap, but never standing up (at least from my observations). To me our birds look like a kindergarten class after lunch, all hunkered down.

I couldn’t find where you’d said how long they’d been yours?
She and 2 roosters came with the house we just bought. Supposedly they are between 1.5 - 2 years old. We moved into the house in September.

He has something wrong with his foot. He hobbles around and doesn’t chase her. They kinda just chill together.

Possibly bumble foot.....it is treatable. I know it will be a pain but if you get him after dark, take pics of his feet top and bottom we can help diagnose his issue.

Well I can’t catch her, I’ve seen her eat some food and scratch.

I would move her after dark when she would be roosting and easy to grab.

Speaking of roosting.....is she getting on the roost or not?

I wonder if she could be missing her previous family. Maybe she’s in a funk from which she will recover quickly, as soon as she realizes how wonderful the new owners are🤞🙏❤️

I have pictures of the top and sides but not bottom. He’s not easy to catch for having a limp. I will try to take pictures a little later today when my daughter gets out of school.

Yes! She is finally roosting! These past 6 weeks or so have been a nightmare, including her and the 2 roosters sleeping in the nesting boxes and you guessed it, they pooped while sleeping. So we built a smaller roost about 6 inches off the floor because the roosts that were in the coop were too close together for them to access and closed the nesting boxes at night/opened them in the morning. Now her and the alpha rooster, along with 5 new gals, are sleeping on the roosts. The other rooster is now in his own area and doing much better—besides his foot.
Anyways, I cleaned the scrape board this morning and there was a splotch of diarrhea. I forgot that I should have taken a picture.

The new birds....Brought in already partially grown?

Any sneezing from the older girl? Coughing? Nasal discharge?

Post whatever pics you have of his feet please.

I didn’t know I was supposed to quarantine new birds and the new girls came from a friend, are about 10 months old, and already laying eggs. None of the chickens or roosters are sneezing, coughing, or have nasal discharge.

At least you know their source and how your friend takes care of theirs. That is a bonus.
It is when bought at a swap, auction and such that really sick birds and carriers come in.

Here are pictures of Pimp Limp’s foot. He is a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, sweet as can be too. Pardon my face in the last pics of the bottom foot, my daughter didn’t warn me. The first 6 pictures were taken a few weeks ago. The rest were done in the last hour. I caught Duke, the alpha rooster who is a Buff Orpington, behind Pimp. Duke often taunts Pimp but he is safe in a different pen next to the flock.

My daughter also help wrangle Gloria, the possibly sick Cinammon Queen, and I’m not sure what I was feeling for but all was feathers. She did seem sensitive in between her pelvic area and liked me holding her and petting her. She calmed down as I felt around.

Pretty good shots!

Yes he has a big nasty bumble on the swollen foot and one on the other foot bottom as well. Looks like the big one has been there a long while.

@Eggcessive can you advise on treating this poor fellows bumbles?
