I have a 3-4yr old (?) RIR/Leghorn mix that appeared to be moving around slowly today. We watched her for a little while and actually caught her sleeping out in the open in the yard! It wasn't sunny and warm. She was just standing there sleeping. I've had her for about 6 months now and I've never seen her do that before. I've never seen any of my girls do that. I have her separated and in the house for observation, but I thought I'd ask you guys what you think. Croup seems large, but I will check her in the morning. She has always had a bald spot on her neck where she or someone has picked the feathers out. The shaft/stick part is still there, but the feather part is gone. She does appear to have grown a bunch of new feathers lately on the rest of her body. Does that make them act wierd? I checked her out and didn't find mites or anything, but her energy level just seems off. Thanks.

Mine aren't even a year old yet and they do it all the time.. Some of them even go in to the roosts to take a snooze.

yes mine always take a nap mid day. They like to relax. Also if they dont get their sleep during the night (noises or whatever) they would be tired during the day. Just like us!

I let my girls out around 6:30AM and they go charging to the feeder and have breakfast. Invariably, by 9:00AM or so they're back inside the coop, napping on their roosts. Then they seem to get re-energized by lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon looking for bugs. They lead a difficult life at my house, as you can tell.

Yes they do...especially when they don't like what you're watching on the TV...Obelisk fell asleep and the only reason she woke up was because she smacked her beak on the floor...

  7. Come on. A chicken has IT MADE. All they HAVE to do is eat, drink and Maybe lay an egg.

I have seen my girls in the garden with the soil up to their tails fast asleep, some laying on their sides. First time I saw this I totally freaked as i thought they were all dead.

Yea, they sleep in the day alright, little turds.

chickens especially love napping under a forsythea bush.. during the spring time when it is in full bloom, they become plump and fat from all the insects, and it keeps them cool too in the summer.. mine have spent entire days underneath it during the summer

When it was summer time and this is my first year of having chickens, I looked out the window one day to just see my roo fall flat to his side! I thought something wrong had happend! I ran out there just to see him get up ruffle his feathers and walk off.
