My flock is a mix of RIR, Barred Rock, Wyandotte, EEs, Buff Orpington, Maran, Australorp, ISA Brown, Comet & 2 surprise mixes, 1 a Brahma & the other I have no clue. All have their unique personalities & sounds they make, but yes, they do chatter, cluck & carry on conversations with eachother & me. They are a joy!
My Roosters are quite vocal as well, & demand their hugs from human mama. The Roos are so sweet & will close their eyes as I gently pet their combs & tiny feathers around eyes, or preen new feathers. They actually love sitting on my lap & being fussed over.
Yesterday a hawk zoomed over the pigeons & the closest Buff Orpington Roo literally said a long drawn out "wowwwww" & it was so hilarious

we laughed for 10 minutes...then of course the Barred Rock mimics laughter whenever he hears me laugh, makes us laugh even more.
Each Hen & Roo responds to their names being said, it's so cool. They know if I say come on, or come here, they will come right over. If someone is laying an egg, she squawks her egg song & everyone else cheers her on, it's quite a funny symphony.
One recent rescue Maran mix hen honks like a goose & will honk excitedly when I walk towards her or look at her, so I have to wonder where she was before...were there geese? I rescued 3 hens & at 1st they were so skittish & afraid, but 2 mos. later they run to me & Honking Lady let's me pet & hug her.
1 Rooster, an EE, was just a young cockeral when I saw him being bullied & chased, he was terrified, so I told the man to add that baby Roo to the hens I was adopting. That poor boy was so scared, when the man finally scooped him up with a large net & presented the bird to me, I held him & he stopped trembling & snuggled in my arms. He rode all the way home curled up on my lap, making sweet little sounds. To this day, he does a special young high pitch crow when he sees me. He will jump & run up to the top peak of a gazebo, looking like a weather vane, & do his baby crow, looking at me & waiting for my reaction. I say, "Oh you good boy, sweet Baby Roo!" Then he happily slides down the gazebo roof, hits the ground & practically bounces over to me, so happy I praised him, then wants his hugs. I love Baby Roo so much! He has always remained grateful that I rescued him that day 7 years ago.
I went to an auction 6 years ago...wow, that's a dangerous place for me because I wanted to adopt Every Animal there! They were bidding on chickens & came to a cage with 3 sad looking hens, heads down, filthy & they looked a bit old. No one would bid, so I did. They seemed traumatized, afraid, skittish, half bald & their combs were pale. After I gently placed them in the cushy crate for the ride home, they just cowered & huddled & never made a sound...broke my heart. I spoke soft & loving to them as I drove, told them I will take care of you girls & love you. Once home, I cleaned them up, tended to their mite scabs, and gave each a gentle Lavender oatmeal shampoo bath in my bathtub, as they sat on cushy towels I dried on low with my hair dryer, which they Loved...they closed their eyes as I fluffed their clean feathers, gave them pedicures, Neosporin on boo boos & vetRX on combs...wow, they looked & felt like new ladies! Honest to goodness, after their "spa day" their spirits lifted & they literally pranced like proud princesses pecking at fresh clover & chickweed. When I offered live mealworms, they didn't even know what they were! Then Chanel, the Brahma, pecked one worm. Then they All pecked a few, slowly with curiosity. 5 minutes later they were clucking happily...it was the 1st sounds they had uttered & they were happy sounds!!!
I love my flock & even though I have quite a few of various ages & breeds, I know each one by the sounds of their voices, Hens & Roos. I love them so very much!
