Maybe a crazy conspiracy theory, but every chick I’ve ever had (either hatched here or shipped) that tends to lie on its back has always died less than a week old.

is this just a symptom of deeper issues?

seriously never had a chicken (out of hundreds) that’s ever thrived as a back sleeper.

Chickens of any age do not sleep on there backs.
A chick flat on it's back is sick, weak or injured and should be watched carefully, removed to a separate recovery area and given special care.
Both of them died overnight.
But I’ve had chicks that died over the years And all of them were back sleepers

I'Ve had two that were always ending up on their backs. They weren't well then, but they did survive. One was due to injury, and i'm not sure of the cause of the most recent one. But ithe can tell you that both of them are now thriving.
