Do coops need lighting?

Hello all. I am having a coop built this week with the hope of buying our pullets soon after. Do Coops need lighting?

What would they need it for? Do you live in a part of the world where it gets very little sunlight, so it would be needed for production?

I can think of many handy uses for coop lighting like those that come on when triggered by predators. Or a light for emergency use. Personally though I just use a hand held torch.

It is always nice to have light for yourself as you may need to enter in the dark in the evening or early morning. And having electricity in the coop is nice if you have a bird in a hospital cage and it needs heat, brooding chicks, heated water bowls in the winter or for some sub zero degree temps where you might need to add a lamp.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! X3, electric/lighting is very nice to have in a coop. Especially if you want older birds to lay though the winter you will need to give them 14+ hours of light and heated waterers are really nice if you live where it freezes a lot.

No you do not have to have electricity but it sure helps in my case
as I sometimes put the brooder in there ......

I don't do any kind of lighting but an outlet for a fan is really nice for the chickens in the summer. And a couple of windows or an open side for plenty of natural light and ventilation.
