Do dogs and goats get along?

oh and I forgot to mention that my dogs were raised from babies around cows, horses, goats, etc, etc on a ranch and were not fenced in and could go anywhere. Their first couple of years, they were ok around the other animals, but as they matured, it got to be too much for them and they started chasing all of those animals. Now they are both about 5 years old and I wouldn't risk putting them with livestock animals because I'm sure they would make lunch out of them. They have very high prey drives. Mine are kept very separate from our chickens and their current sheep and horse neighbors.

It depends on the dogs and it depends on the goats. Some of our dogs don't like goats and some of our goats don't like dogs. Good Luck!

My dog, a mutt, my goat, a cross breed of some kind, got along great. They would run and play in the yard together. Archy, the goat would try to headbutt the dog. Copper could out run him though. The goat would also follow my dog around everywhere. I think he thought he was a big goat. If Archy was somewhere he shouldn't be all I would have to do is call the dog and the goat would see him and follow him back.

i agree, it depends . but i had two pitbulls, two dobermans and three boxers that laid in the shade of an oak tree with my two paint horses and two pygmy goats all in peace. it would freak people out!!! my dogs were all raised to be guard dogs but knew it was not acceptable to be aggressive towards the other animals.now we have three dogs and 1 cat and the cat sleeps with dogs, it can be done.

I agree...it depends on the dogs and goats...We use Pyrenees, and they have been wonderful. Our Aussie has "learned" how to behave around livestock. Never leave them unattended together unless you are fairly certain you have observed them under a variety of different circumstances with no untoward behavior - and even then, the best of dogs is never 100% trustworthy...they are still dogs. Here is our main Pyr protecting the first of twins, while mom delivers the second. be warned that lambing and kidding season and the scent of blood is often the trigger that turns a good dog "bad" (we don't think they are bad

...but that is the term used )...Gus is a fabulous dog, year-round. You would be taking a sizable risk with a sporting, herding or mixed breed...Can you trust a bird dog with your chickens?
