Do Dominiques Go Broody??

Ok. First things first. A hen will go broody if she's going to go broody. It cannot be forced. By leaving the eggs in the nest, you can do one of two things: Have broken eggs/rotten eggs or begin the nasty habit of egg-eating.

I would get fake eggs and use those as the "dummies" for broody birds.

Next, get a line that is known for broodiness. Silkies and Cochins are known for their brooding abilities.

Next, not every hen of every breed known for broodiness will become broody. Each bird is different and each bird has their own hormonal cycle. When a hen wants to brood, they will brood.

I have a Minorca hen that is part of the Mediterranean class that is known to NOT go broody. Yet, every year on May 5 she goes broody. It's like clockwork. Some breeds may surprise you, others can disappoint.
