Do droppings need to sit a year before they can be used as fertilizer?

A 4 or 5" long airator stone will cost $2-3 or so at Meijer/Walmart and then you don't have to do that weird separator. It'd give a lot more than 3 streams of bubbles plus the weight of it holds it at the bottom. Eventually you have to replace them (the stones), I wonder if the bacteria/poo would dissolve it faster. And unless you're concerned with too much aerobic growth there's no need to ever shut it off. The pumps are meant to run 24/7 and don't pull a lot of electricity or anything. If we don't move the fish tank to the compound we'll at least take the air pump!

There is no reason to be concerned about "too many" aerobic bacteria in a batch of compost tea, believe me! The more aerobic bacteria, the better....

The way to do it -- if you are going to use a pump on the gizmo is to run the pump 24/7 during the brewing process. Twelve hours without that pump, and your aerobic bacteria will all have died off, and all you will have left are the unwanted anerobic (non-oxygen breathing) bacteria.

Actually, I suppose that I should put an aquarium pump on mine. It really is a good idea to do that, and I've said several times that I'm going to do it.

My wife and I have never had a problem keeping the stuff stirred up -- even though the night -- so I guess I've just not gotten around to doing it. And honestly, if your family has wierd enough sleep schedules so that somebody will always be up to stir the mix, then installing a pump is not necessary.

But for NORMAL families (rather than wierd ones like my own), just adding that simple pump will make all the difference between brewing something beneficial for the garden, and brewing something that can be more harmful than helpful.
