Do ducks go to BED at night like chickens?

Mine do. I have runners. they will stay out and play but when we come out with a flash light at night they head right into their house to go to bed. Sometimes they go in there on their own and we just have to close the door. It took a few nights of herding in them in, but they know what to do now and head in as soon as they see someone coming at night.

Hmmmm. my chickens are lazy and they go to bed early. The automatic door closes behind them an hour later. If the ducks go to bed late, I can set the timer for the door accordingly. My fear is that dusk will be the worst time for predators and they might not go in before dusk. I guess it'll be a matter of getting them into some sort of habit.

Thanks all

Mine do...they put themselves in and we just go and shut the door,If for some reason I need them in before they go in on their own...we just say"Time to go to bed!" and they herd right in..it's pretty cool!

My Ducks come up for supper every evening around 4pm, I spend about 45 minutes in the pen with them getting my snuggles and just enjoying them. I go back into the house and head back out to the duck pen as soon as dark hits and most times my ducks are already in their house waiting for me to shut and lock the door. Now and then they'll be having fun in the pool and waddle into their house once they see me coming to the pen. Ducks are very easy to train. I believe it took me 5 days to train my original Pekins to go into their house at night, my other ducks since then just followed the Pekins' routine.

Just herd the ducks by walking slowly behind them, raise your left arm if you want them to go right..your right arm if you want them to go left...after a few nights of herding them to bed they'll probably start going on their own. Or at least start going to their house once they see you coming at bedtime.

Cool! They would be the only creatures on this farm that are followed instruction! : )

I wonder if they might follow the chickens lead !? ! ?

My 4 ducks are in a fenced in area on the side of our house with hay all over the ground they love free ranging through the hay and the fence line. They have 2 swimming pools & a small building with hay for nesting. They also have an area that is partly under the house with a bunch of hay and a food tray, they lay their eggs in there too. I put up a canopy in there next to the pool for shade in the day time and to give them more of a covered area from the rain, they have a food tray/with food 24 hrs a day, a huge rubber bowl with drinking water and a bunch of hay.... ~Do you know that with all of this these dumb ducks still prefer to stay in the swimming pool and IF they get out of the pool they will lay on the WET/COLD ground in the RAIN & Freezing Cold weather.

Boy they sure do stress me out(Only because I worry about them getting cold) ~Oh...These ducks don't know what sleep is, they seem to party all night.

I Love my ducks & they are good pets, I talk to them & when they hear my voice they start quacking away. They like for me to dig for worms for them, they even help.

After seeing a buddy of their get its head ripped off by a great horned owl, my ducks go to bed without any prompting.

I would say that all of mine go to bed and sleep ( after they have eaten their corn ) on one leg with one eye open ( maybe for balance.... ) I do call all of mine in at night ( Muscovy Ducks - 5, Barbary ducks 3 and 15 Indian Runner's BUT...tonight for some strange reason one Indian Runner did not return home..... I went to feed my horses and I could see her on the River so I chased her along the river to the Mill Pond and as I arrived back at the stables I saw her exit the water and strut her way down to the stable block - the grump stood in front of the door as if to say " let me in NOW"! I must say that I was so pleased to see her return to the safety of her refuge that she was forgiven... for delaying my geese to go indoors for the night.... for my feeding the horses half an hour later than I would have done normally had I not been calling "quackiedoodie" for what seemed forever... ah well.... she is home and now asleep with her companions.... and I am satisfied that all is well here at "Dysfunctional Farm"

My Ducks DO go to bed at night - some of them have even gone onto the roost in the chicken house...... mostly though they sleep on the one leg (on the floor) and are happy to do so.... in answer....... I don't KNOW...!

Spare a thought for Michelle and Scooter .... and wish them well.... Scooter come home to your Mom.......!!!

See "My Heart Is Broken" Thread - it really is heartbreaking...
