Hello All, We have too many drakes, so we will be eating some of them. The ones that are of age spend a lot of time in the mud eating bugs and worms in the mud. Does that effect the taste of the duck? Do they need to be on a certain diet before the dreaded day?

@Miss Lydia I know!!! I don't want to, but we have too many!! The teenagers are over 4 months, there are 4 of them. Then, there are 9 babies!! 😢 I won't be around when it happens.

I sold some muscovy ducklings to someone and all 4 turned out to be drakes she butchered them and they said the meat was to lean. Which most people like they went and got Pekins for more fatty meat. As for what they eat makes them taste weird. Might want to pen them up a few weeks before slaughter and only feed them their feed. Be a shame to not be able to eat the meat.

But cows eat grass. My ducks eat grass, too, but because it is rainy season they spend most of their time in the mud.
That's what I've heard, I've not tried it yet. But, most who post about it says that muscovy taste like a steak. It is a leaner duck and not as fatty as other ducks.
Cows don't eat just grass btw. 😉

You got me there. Especially cows in Costa Rica. We are ALL in the mud here, right now. We have three more months of constant rain until Dec. when our summer starts. 😅
