I have been trying to sex my button quail, and recently I have seen (always heard) 2 of the button quail doing a laughing crow. I thought that 2 male button quail would kill each other if housed together, is there anyway one of the "Laugher's" is a female, or does this indicate that both are male? I only have 3 and am 99% sure one is female.

I can't post a picture till tomorrow. The one in question is completely grey (blue) with no markings what so ever. Solid colour. It makes the exact same noise as the one I thought was male ( has redish feathering near bottom).

Redish means boy.

That's what I thought, And he crows a laugh like crow. Now I realize that there are 2 doing the same laughing crow. I thought the all grey one was female. Guess not.

Females CAN crow in button quail. There is a hormonal inbalance causing them to do so but they can breed normally just the sounds may be different

UMMM HATE TO TELL YOU THIS BUT BUTTONS ARE KEPT IN MONOGOMOUS PAIRS... NOT TRIOS. ANY OTHER CONFIGURATION WILL LEAD TO PIGMY QUAIL WARS RATHER QUICKLY ONCE BREEDING CONDITIONS ARE MET.
