One of my A&M's is 8 weeks old. He/she will occasionally sing. It's not crowing (I've watched all the crowing vids on here!). It's almost a cooing sound. No eggs yet, but no real crowing either, so I don't know what to make of it. It's kind of a pretty sound. So is this possibly a girl, or just a girly man?

Singing.....

does it sound like this?:

If so, she's scared

OR

Does it sound like this??

If so, it's a roo and that's their crow

OR does it sound like this?

If so, that's what I call "the egg call" is a hen announcing she's ready to mate
ALSO at the begining of the film 12 seconds in you'll hear *lightly* another call they do it's a paranoid or *need something* call.
theres other sounds both hens and roos make but these are the only ones i have filmed so far

None of the above. He/she seems pretty relaxed when he/she does it, and it's almost always when he/she is looking through the wire. It almost sounds like a mourning dove's call.

Maybe it's longing for his/her old friends? I got him/her 4 weeks ago from a guy who had all browns. Somehow he ended up with a lone A&M mixed up in the eggs he bought, so he let me have him/her. He/she still looks at the other A&M's like "What ARE you?"

I wish they did though that'd be pretty. Im just joking i know you have a coturnix but maybe your mourning doves sound strange around your place

I always read people saying their coturnix coo... but they really don't. They chirp, chortle, and yelk but they don't coo sadly. <--- ETA the only reason im posting this is because i dont want newbies to coturnix thinking that they're getting a bird that sounds like a dove... doves sound pleasant, and even though I like the sound of coturnix quail, they don't sound anywhere like a dove if they did I bet more people would own them though!!!

You might be hearing their "i see something scary in the sky call" it's a very low almost growl.

Hmm. What does a yelk sound like?

This isn't EXACTLY like a mourning dove, but it's the closest to similar. And it's not frequently, just once maybe once or twice a week. It started at about 5 weeks, so I thought it was crowing at first. Then I heard what real crowing sounds like and that's not it.

The others don't make any sound at all yet, and they just turned 6 weeks old. Could it be that this one's a boy who doesn't have anything to crow about yet?

b.hromada :

My coturnix quail hatched on April 23, and I've got a bunch of roos crowing. I was wondering how to tell their sex. Is this the only way to tell.
