Do Geese Fly?

Quote:
Most domestic breeds do not fly. Many individual birds are capable of flight during their first year after their wings have developed but their body hasn't put on so much weight that the wings can't get them in the air. pure Africans get heavy fast and seldom fly, chinas the smaller version of the africans usually can fly if they want to.

One of my adult Pilgrim Mixes flew away... but then again we live on a 500ft elevation. She had no problem getting up into the air about 10-15 feet and then flew right down the hillside. We tried to look for her because it was December and we were kind of worried but we never found her. She probably became someones Christmas Dinner.

Some breeds do some don't. Africans are a heavy breed an probably wont be light enough too. Especially if you keep them pleasantly plump!

Some Africans are more like chinese though and might be small enough, but even the chinese-like ones I've seen were big.

I most of last summer and fall trying to teach two geese to fly by running down hill with them. Our Roman got some lift a few times, and the chinese did a few nose dives. I had great fun, the neighbors who saw made sure to take their morning coffee on their back decks to watch and laugh, the geese got lots of exercise, but no one ever flew...

WELL.....I have a pair of African Geese. My Madeline is the flyer of the two. They are 5mos old.
Just this morning I heard her take off, fly above my head and landed on our barn roof! She had to figure out how to get down...LOL
She is such a show off. I doubt they would ever fly away...they are too sociable with us.

My geese usually only get up to 4 feet off the ground. At that height the only fly about 30 feet. Bori, my 1 1/2 year old gander only gets a foot off the ground.

My geese fly - I have poms and they fly anything up to a couple of hundred meters (but generally only fly 30-40) about 8-10' off the ground. They always come back though.

WEll...the hatchery was supposed to send French Toulouse geese, a pair for mating. I, unfortunately received African Geese.
If they send replacements, I will then have 4. The African geese are very vocal !!!!
