Do hybrids really lay far less after a year?

I'm new to chickens and trying to learn all I can. I have a couple of hens now and am growing my flock. In trying to decide between heritage breeds and high production hybrids, I've read online that the hybrids "burn out" faster, laying far fewer eggs after their first year, while the traditional breeds are more steady in their laying into year two and even a third season. However, I can't find any authoritative info or research to back this claim up. It's all anecdotal. Can anyone tell me if this is actually true or whether it's an "urban chicken myth?" Thanks!
 
You get your choice: A lot of eggs for a short time, or, fewer eggs for a longer time. You get the same amount of eggs per chicken (for the most part), just the time frame is different. Production breeds are more economical to own, as long as you don't keep them longer than two years.
