Do I clean the eggs?

If i bring the egg in from outside (it's been about 100 degrees) should i stick them in a carton and leave it out for a while before i put it in the fridge?

I like to see how many eggs we get in a day so we collect eggs all thru the day and leave them in the coated wire basket on the kitchen counter until the end of the day. That way they have all cooled down and are room temp when we put them in the egg carton in the fridge.

Thank you all for the advice! The egg had just a tiny bit of dirt (poop?) on it so I put it in the fridge but have not yet washed it...Is it ok to just wash it with cold water right before I cook it? How long should I wait until cooking a fresh egg?

How weird is that I feel so reluctant to eat an egg from my own chicken but I don't think twice about eating eggs from an unknown source...

Also, I'd like to give some eggs to my next door neighbor. Right now I only have two laying but would like to get at least 3 or 4 to take over...should I wash them berfore taking them over? Instruct her to wash right before she eats them?

Yes, just rinse it off before cooking and you'll be fine. When they learn to lay in the nests the eggs will be cleaner, but there is still the odd dirty egg. If they are clean, I don't wash them at all.

I only give away or sell clean eggs or ones with a tiny smudge that I can wipe off easily. If they are dirty I keep them home. Most of us would be horrified to open an egg carton and see a dirty egg, even if it did come from next door, and instructing her to clean them will only add confusion. They come out of the hen ready to eat!

Re-read my post from earlier.

Needs to be 105* water to wash the egg.

Don't put in the frigerater with poo...the egg can become contaminated.

We wash our eggs because we sell them, clean or dirty.

Eggs.........eggs are very healthy for the body ...it gives so much energy for the body...
if we eat daily one egg it would be very good for health....when we boil the egg the container which is present inside will improve the fat in the body...we have to clean the egg properly before boiling it wash neatly....the egg makes hair silky and energy to the growth for hair................

When washing eggs, the bloom is washed off.

But when poo gets on an egg, the bloom isn't there(if they poo when the egg is layed), so the egg can become contaminated.
Also if the chicken steps on the egg and it gets stratches the bloom is removed.
Try hard boiling your eggs and then dye them. It is amazing the amount of scratches the chickens nails do to an egg. Where the scratches are the bloom is not there.
The tempature makes a difference on if the contaminates can reach the egg.
Keep at room temp until you wash them, the cold will suck in contaminates. The warm water will push out contaminates.

Finally, if you cook your eggs properly according to the USDA then the contaminates will be cooked away.

Thanks for the info on the subject! We've been getting eggs for about 2 wks now and my mom and I have debated this. She won't eat the eggs and doesn't want them unless I wash them right away after getting 'em out of the nest. Yet she gets farm eggs from someone near her and has no idea how they're done.. yet I've seen the lady go right in and pluck 'em out from under a hen and put into the carton! She's just hesitant to eat mine b/c she just KNOWS I"m doing it wrong
