do I deworm?

I have chickens of different ages and breeds (a 15 week old silkie, barred rock, bantam cochin, lav orpington, 24 weeks old isa, full easter egger and cinnamon and 2 new hens as of today) what should I do for worming if anything? never done it and they have never had it. didnt even think of it till I discovered my one hen has fly strike that I initially thought was worms.

A lot of people never deworm unless they see a problem, but others (including me) deworm twice a year--once in the spring, and then again in the fall/winter. Some good wormers to use include SafeGuard (its sold for goats), Valbazen, and the Worminator. Wazine and Ivermectin are other dewormers, but they are only effective on certain types of worms (all the ones listed above are more broad-spectrum).

Most wormers can be found at a livestock supply store, and the Worminator can be ordered online from here: http://www.twincitypoultrysupplies.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=584. The Worminator dosage is 2 drops for large-fowl, 1 drop for bantams administered orally, and you can repeat it 18 days later. I don't know that other wormer dosages, as I only have experience with the Worminator, but I'm sure you can find the dosages by searching BYC.

Some wormers tell you not to eat the for a couple of days.I have an old remedy that works for me.Two table spoons of bleach per 5 gallons of water if I get it to strong they won't drink it. Saves me money.

Bleach contains chlorine and lye,both are extremely dangerous and corrosive to skin,eyes and lungs.

Speaking of lye, I've used Red Devil lye to worm hogs many years ago.
Also, city water systems chlorinate their water and we drink it.
