Do I get rid of my Rooster?

This is real easy.
What's more important to you? Your kids safety or keeping this rooster?
You can twist and turn what's going on with him. You can try to make what's happening into something its not. You can wait and see if he changes. You can try to correct him or rehabilitate him. There's several options but bottom line is while he is there you're putting your kids at risk of injury maybe severe injuries.
If your comfortable with that then keep him around if not get rid of him.

Yeah, problem is that he's not in a run, they free range round the back of my house and in a big field out the back so potentially he can come at anyone from anywhere. From what I've said do you think his behaviour was aggression or was he just treating me like one of his hens, he's not vicious or aggressive to them, he just tries to do what they do best and make babies haha....I've only had him 5 days so do you think I should get rid or hold out for another while? I really appreciate all this advice!
It is more a protective behavior, that what alfa roosters do!
They will protect their hens from predators to the death, it sounds like a good rooster for your hens, but it could be a problem to you.

Yeah, you're completely right! I've already made steps to rehome him, thank you

I know it sucks. You want to hope it isn't what it is or that something can be done.
No one wants to bring in a pet then have to re home it.
Believe me I get it but it is for the best. There's a lot of roosters out there that desperately need a home and a lot that can work for your situation.
I have a small child, probably close to 100 roosters or cockerels and almost all of them are free range.
I never 100% trust any of them but that's what you do as a parent. Put your kids first and worry.
Hope you find a good rooster if you choose to get another one.

I know, I'm sooooo disappointed, he's such a gorgeous boy and they were only got to be pets, my hens are just lovely and are never too far away from me so I think I may put the notion of a rooster out of my head! On the plus side one of my girls is broody and I've managed to place 10 fertile eggs under her without 'too' much drama, although it was touch and go for a day whether or not she would take to them so we'll hopefully have babies in a couple of weeks....woo hoo!!!

If you've never seen a rooster attack, a real rooster attack, you cant believe how viscious it can be! You would not believe the damage that little bird can do. Adults have a hard time stopping an attack, let alone children.

You aint kidding. I've been flogged when younger and I'll never forget it. I also seen my son flogged. probably the worst few seconds in my life. You know one of those kids screaming that scream that just turns you inside out.
Guess that's why i have no tolerance for nasty roosters and i cringe when i read these posts where kids are in the home and people just don't want to get rid of the rooster or some of this advice given about how to fix them.
My son could of easily lost an eye and someone else's child could too. What rooster would ever be worth a chance of that.
