Do I have a rooster?

I got 8 hens. At about 7 1/2 weeks I was working in my basement shop where I had the brooder box and I thought I heard an attempt at a crow. I put them outside at 8 / 9 weeks and shortly after I started hearing the crowing. All along one of my hens had a bigger and redder comb and waddle. I to am new at this and looking back I should have known sooner that one of my hens wasn't a hen.

Well, roosters will start crowing pretty much whenever they want to. Some will be so insecure of their roosterliness that they have to proclaim it for all of the world to hear at only a few days of age while others will be so secure in their roosterliness that they don't crow until they are almost a year (if at all).

I've never heard of the bump on the chest thing but there is probably some old wives tail about it much like the holding the chick upside down to determine the sex.

As to the rounded feathers... It's the hackle (neck) feathers and saddle feathers (right in front of the tail) that will become pointy on the rooster (in most, but not all, breeds). Your roo is still to young for these feathers to be prominent but you may find them starting to sprout.

The intensity of the red over the shoulders is a rooish trait. You have a lovely EE roo.
