Do i have a rooster?

I purchased all pullets but I have one chicken that is maturing like a rooster would. It has a bright red wattle and pretty feathers. All of my chickens are only about 4 months old so I don't have any eggs yet. I will post a picture of it if I need too. Also I am new to this site so any tips on how to run it?

Hi and welcome to BYC - we will need a picture to help you answer this question (you may also want to consider posting it in the "What Breed or Gender" forum as it will get you better feedback on that subject). "4 months" should mean the bird is around 16 weeks (give or take) - which for some breeds would be approaching the point of lay (POL - time they start laying eggs) which is when most females start to get nice and red. Do you know what breed your chicken is?

I'm pretty new too. A pic would be really nice. I read that at this young age, the best way to tell is by dropping something heavy beside your chick. A hen will duck, I think, while a rooster will look up and around for the source of the noise. I'm not quite sure that this works the best, though.

Unfortunately, that has to be filed along side all the other "old wives' tales" as to how to sex chickens - the (completely unscientific) theory behind it being that males are bold and females are timid, and it has a 50/50 chance of being accurate, lol.
