I'm passingly familiar with the history and controversy of this breed in America as well as the lack of pure stock so I don't want to flame up on that. I'm wondering if I can ethically call my birds onagadori (append proto or american as the prefix if you choose) based on their physical characteristics. My BBR is only 10 months old so I can not judge his molting but I am impressed with his color and tail growth and want to see what others think about his form. Lets assume his tail doesn't molt...does he meet the physical characteristics of onagadori? When I ask the question I'm referring to the quality that can be expected in the US. I guess another way of phrasing it is, if you believe there are some predominantly onagadori descendants in the US, would mine qualify as one? Thanks!

There not a phoenix, phoenix would have red earlobes.
I beleve that the coud be a "American Type Onagadori" but I cant say that they are true Onagadori becouse I heard that there are no true Onagadori in the U.S. only "project birds"..

I would have to disagree, phoenix typically do have white earlobes and are a white egg layer, but it is true that there are not any purbred onagadori in the US. Let me clarify, there are phoenix with both color earlobes but the majority have white.

Kelpie he is a very stunning BBR Phoenix and has a very nice tail, with proper care his tail could potentially be 20 feet long. His hen is nice too.

Thanks guys. I hatched out eggs from a guy in NE Maryland who said his line originated from Cy Hyde. I don't know anything about his background so I don't know if this is true. He had a picture of one of his breedstock where the tail touched the ground when he was holding the bird up above his shoulders. I'm thinking it was a 5-8 foot tail with all the curl involved. I know we don't have purebred onagadori but I thought the birds were represented in a few project lines that are distinct from phoenix. I'm wondering what traits about my bird (besides not molting tail) makes him one or the other.
