Do I have to switch to layer feed if they start laying eggs? I am already feeding them oyster shell, so do I really need to switch? Should they be on something different? Im feeding them all-purpose feed plus oyster shell in a separate feeder.

yes you really need to switch. Oyster shell is just a supplement for calcium. Once they start laying, a well balanced layer ration is needed..I'm kinda your neighbor..live over in Ketchum and you should be able to just get the TSA Compulay. It's balanced and relatively low on the price list.

I do not feed layer feed. All of my birds get gamebird feed and some get flock raiser. My hens do not do well on the layer feeds that have no animal proteins. Vegetarian diets feeds don't work well for me.

i feed all my birds chicken scratch,, and game bird maintanence,, and a few times a week i throw in a handful of chick starter.,,,,,plus they get all our table scratch. i have people say that ive got the healthiest looking birds in this area,,,,i laugh and say i just feed and water them,,hehe

what's hard on the kidneys is too high of a protein level and that is gamebird feed. Your layers need a well balanced diet of fats, carbs and proteins made just for them or you burn them out. That's why they don't last more than 3 yrs. Give them a protein content around 17% or so..that is sufficient until time of molt then boost the level up with nutritious treats , things like that.
