do I just have a nasty roo

or is he protecting "his" broody and chicks. My broody started hatching eggs yesterday. I saw one this am, all dry. Tonight when DD's and I went out to check the progress, we were kneeling down by the stock tank brooder when a BO roo attacked DD 14. She hit him away, then I saw him come at her with spurs! I know he's going to be soup because he's been stalking me too, but never spurs.

Can I expect this behavior from other roos when the chicks start coming this spring or is he just mean?

I dunno if he is just mean or not, but the spurs come out....so does the soup pot!

I've never had a roo that old personally and my Pheasant cock was to skittish to want to fight me but I've heard of others like this, I would be cutting off the spurs and then go a few rounds with him...but soups good too lol

Is this a new behavior? Is he young?

What works for me is to keep walking toward him and make him move all over the yard by walking after him and nudging him along with your foot. Don't let him eat or drink or go anywhere without your permission while you do this. Wear heavy jeans and protection if you have to but keep him moving, try for 15 minutes once or twice a day. The worst thing you can do is back away. See if that fixes the problem.

He's about 8 months old. I think he's low man on the totem pole. He was a late developer, in fact he was marked as a hen when we were getting ready to process the extras. We ended up with 4 more than planned. I have chased him around, but unfortunately they've been cooped up since early Dec. Although they have a lot of room in the barn, no one can get away from anybody and they are all getting stir crazy. He's the only roo that is getting that bold. We've just been waiting for warmer weather before the extras go to the freezer. With those actions, though we might not be waiting.

I had a naughty Barred Rock Roo who attatched daughter who was 5 at the time, I picked up the shovel and went after him.....we gave him a little while to see how he did though and he got so bad he would even attack me and my husband, we had to bring shovels into the coop to protect ourselves....needless to say he become chicken soup! It's not worth keeping a mean Roo around.
