Do i keep him?

I always handle my chicks from day 1, that's how I have so many friendly roosters, only have 2 buttheads amongst my flocks, both in the same coop. One is just an ankle biter, not a concern, the other one hates my guts, but I still love him. Only reason he's around, is he's the only rooster of that specific breed, & he's beautiful. Will probably replace him, once I get a friendly one.

I've raised him and the flock from day old chicks. I was supposed to have all hens, so when I ended up with some roos okay whatever find them a home but with Robbie he has solely been My favorite so it pains me that knowing you raise them from babies and are very handsy to turn out they will still turn on you ugh I can't take it 💔 I can't risk the kiddos
Yea, I don't know what it is about young roos but they seem to latch on to the humans and quickly become the favorite. Heard this story countless times and it's rough every time.

But with that last sentence, you hit the nail right on the head - these are livestock, they are ultimately there to serve you and your family. If they are detrimental to your family, they gotta go.

Human aggression is something that can be inherited from parents, or grandparents that are human aggressive, whether it's a hen, or rooster. This is more common in males then females though.
Yea and getting random chicks from a feed store (not a good quality feed store at that) is probably not helping me right now.

All of mine came from the feed store, except a few that I got from hatching eggs, & directly from a hatchery.

Breeds I've only had issues with agression is RIRs, & New Hampshires. Both from TSC.

Once, I got a very human/chicken aggressive Silkie cockerel from TSC, he became soup one day. Luckily he was the only one.

RIR such a bummer but truthfully I knew that if Robbie was a roo I'd be screwed because of all the people talking bout rir aggressiveness.

That's interesting I was telling my hubby that TSC was probably the best place to get chicks lol apparently not

Yea, feed stores are always a crapshot. The only real advantage in them is to get the chicks right now and to (hopefully) reduce their overall shipping. Breeds will often be wrong, sexes may very well be wrong too. I've heard horror stories where people want egg layers and end up with meat birds that they must now process.

One strategy I've taken on myself with feed stores is to look at every lot that they have and just select one from each. If you go with a specific breed, you aren't likely to get what you ordered, but at least with the broad selection you will get at least a few of what you wanted. However, if they have Cornish X in any bin, just walk away unless you are willing to process meat birds.

My personal preference has been to order from hatcheries, but not everyone wants to get enough birds to meet the minimums.

I like Ideal best since their minimum is a dollar amount rather than a number of chicks and I've had good luck with their birds.
