do I leave them on the wire?

I throw it in the washing machine after the hatch is complete along with the sponges from the incubator. I wash them with mild laundry soap and bleach and then air dry the shelf liner and sponges until next time. I have sponges cut into small strips to completely fill the wells with sponges and then two full size sponges I put in during lockdown.

You don't need to take them out of their shell or the carton they get out all by themselves just fine. You do not want to open the bator during hatch at all so humidity stays up for the later eggs to hatch.

Yea that spongy shelf liner is nice but it isn't necessary. People hatch on the wire mesh all the time. The liner just makes clean up much easier!

Good Luck with your hatch!

what about cardboard once you remove the egg turner?

Also, what are the sponges for? I know they would hold moisture, but is it better than just pouring it into the wells? I have a genesis 1588 that has the plastic tray with molded wells. Should I add sponges to them?

I choose the no fuss method and have great success with my hatches. They are laid right on the wire and typically any that were meant to hatch do. Good luck with your hatch!
