I'm just starting in this backyard chicken adventure and was told today that I need a rooster or my chickens will not lay eggs. Is this true? I hope not because roosters are noisy (aren't they?) and if that bugs my neighbours I will get busted...in my town you need an acre of land before you can have 'livestock' and I only have .7 of an acre. I don't have any birds yet, am still searching for some but have a fabulous coop. Of course, our chickens will turn into pets almost immediately I'm sure and will not technically be livestock, right?!

welcome!!!! you came to the right place...

you DO NOT need rooster for hens to lay eggs

No female needs a male to make eggs. Chickens are no different from any other female animal on the planet.
Check out the learning section of this site; you can find great information that will give you answers before someone tells you bad information.

Wowser!! This is fast! Thanks for replying, I'm amazed!! I'm hoping to find some hens really soon and will definitely post photos of my first egg. It is nice to know you are all out there with good info for me. New projects are always scary, aren't they, am looking forward to this. Thanks again,
