Do I need a special permit or license to sell chicks or can I just sell them on E-bay/craigslist?

I'm in Massachusetts & I want to go the incubator route to hatch eggs but I need to know if I need any special license or permits to sell chicks this spring? Or can I just hatch the little buggers & sell them as a straight run??? Do I need to be NPIP?? Should I maybe ask the town board of health??

I recon some states may be different,but around here ya can sell live birds and eggswithout permits but not butcherd birds. I would check with ur local officials to be sure.

I sell my excess wyandottes locally on craigslist all the time. Also, the Kentucky swaps don't require documentation the way they do with goats (scrapie? tags) and cattle. I need to become NPIP to I can ship chicks through the Post Office. They one downside of NPIP is that I can only buy from other participants. However, I've found here in KY that is not a bad thing. We have a glut of people who have chicken "puppy mills". As far as eggs, I label the box with "live embryos" and "do not radiate". I don't specify the species. Let them think that I'm shipping velociraptor eggs..

We do have rules in MAss. Still new to all this and only know a little. TOwn officials are not as up on things as the state people. Try contacting your local extension and also ask how to reach the state inspectors as the NPIP testing is free. Mass does have rules about selling eggs; do a google search to find the details. Selling from your driveway has different rules than selling at a farmers market. Inspection is important.
