Do I need grit?

My soil is frozen solid from November through most of April, and is currently buried under 4' of snow.

Best to provide them with the proper sized digestive granite grit from the get go.

I tossed a few handfuls of Grit in the coop on the floor.
I don't' have a spot for them right now. Plus this will get them to scratch around more as I also toss food on the floor too during the Winter here
