Do I need more laying boxes?

Well I will be darn. Did not know there was a ratio to box. I have 10 boxes now and 7 hens. Getting ready to build a separate retreat. But based on what I do have now, I am gathering I have enough for 40 hens? That's so funny.

You asked about keeping them quiet- nope, if they're going to sing the egg song (I assume that's the noise you mean), they're going to sing it. Not a whole lot you can do about it, short of running out with treats every time you hear it.

Haha! Like I said I have two hens who fight over the same box, but yet.....Its not really fighting its more of just clucking really loud! lol

I have 5 laying and 1 broody they all lay in the same box doesn't matter how many I have.

I have 11 hens and they all lay in the same box or at most 2 boxes. We have 9 boxes and at least 7 each day are not being used

I've got 8 nest boxes to 30 hens. Most of the hens would rather cram themselves in an occupied nest box then move to the next one (sometimes three to a box since this is the most that will fit). I'd say probably only about 4 of the nests get used on a daily basis.
