do I need regular lighting along with red bulb in heat lamp?

I decided to use a red bulb in my heat lamp after I read that a clear bulb might inhibit sleep, but elsewhere I read that the chicks should have light 24/7? Do I need to keep the regular ceiling light on 24/7? For the 1st few days? Brooder is going to be in a spare room right off of the living room.

No, chicks do NOT need white light 24/7...in fact, having darkness helps in their sleep cycles just like it does in people The red light will have to be on 24/7 in order to regulate their heat, but go ahead and shut the room light off when you go to bed...tuck your little ones in, and have everyone get a good night's sleep

I agree...the red light is enough. I keep my brooder in my living room with a red light 24/7. During the day, there is extra light from windows and overhead light, but at night everything is turned off except the red heat lamp.

I have a white light on during daylight hours. At night I turn on my blue reptile light for warmth. It simulates moonlight, and from what I have read chickens can't see blue light. I have done this from day one and my chicks sleep like babies and won't be afraid of the dark when they are old enough to go into the coop.
