Do I need to bring my babies(chickens) in?

Yea Chelly, can you believe how cold its gotten? Sheesh, what happened to Indian Summer and fall even. This is more like WINTER! EEKS.

I went from wearing shorts to freezing my rear off. We havent turned our furnace on yet, but might have to tonite. Luckily our house holds heat well.

I just am used to bringin those silly chickens in, and they haven't had temps like this, they were too young to be out when it was spring and this chill an by time they got to be old enuff, it was warmed up a lot. I am not so worried bout the cold, but I know when I am wet, its a different story. I wished that stupid chicken would stay out of the rain. It was supposed to clear off and the sun come out, but I dont think its going to.

You should see my lil ones, they are a laugh a minute. I finally put the two together and the showgirl (silkie x turken) is now following the other one around like a puppy but the other one, (the lil barred rock) really doesnt WANT a follower.

Its now warmed up here - its so weird, I just put the girls out at 3pm... Some unfortunate grasshoppers were basking in the sun in their tractor

I don't know how normal this weather is, but its a bit of a shock to us, just last week we were whining about how hot it was, we were sweltering in the 90's and suddenly we can't find enough warm clothes to wear! I had a small space heater going this morning, then I started up the dishwasher (

- cause it heats up the kitchen really nicely!) last week I was frantically making ice cubes to put in with the chickens cause it was SO hot out there.

Its VERY normal for Nebraska, Chelly, get used to it. You will hear people tell you, I guess we have a saying.."if you dont like the weather, wait five minutes" and it CAN be true.

I remember going camping one spring, it was a balmy 85 degree day,a cold front came thru and it snowed that night,I froze my REAR off. Finally packed up and left, couldnt believe it. In spring and fall, it varies greatly like that, in summer it can vary by about 40 degrees per day, but not so wild a swing unless a thunderstorm moves thru.

Yea, its warmed up here a bit too, still raining but I just went out to give them some food cuz they were complaining about the food being out, and give them some corn cuz I thought it was so cold, and darned if it hadnt warmed up pretty good. Ah, worry for nothing...

jmho........
You should just send off for some diapers and make them house chickens. If you're afraid to leave them out cuz of preditors, they'll never have a real chance to get use to the cold and winter is coming. So just make them house chooks and take them out for a stroll during the warmest part of the day.

You ladies crack me up! Nebraska, Louisiana, all your states talking about the cold weather coming. I would feel guilty asking about "weather-proofing" my birds and getting them ready for winter. Winter here is usually around 65 on the chillier days! I think my birds will stay outside, possibly get rained on maybe 3 or 4 times and have to endure those cold 40 degree nights once or twice. I do not seriously know how you can live in a place that gets so blasted cold in the winter. I think I would not leave the house. Don't you go stir crazy a couple of months in?

I was born and raised on a farm in Illinois in the late 40's. Then at age 18 I moved to Hawaii and eventually San Francisco where I lived for 35 years, and loved every minute of it.

But eventually I came full circle. When it was time to retire, I could think of "no place like home." So here we are, back on the farm, raisin' chickens and having the time of our lives! By choice!

Give me four distinct seasons any day! Just about the time you can take no more of one season.....it turns into another, that, eventually, you will be sick to death of!

I gave my girls a little corn last night as well - they're so used to the "chick chick...." when we bring treats, they FELL over each other trying to get to my DH first! (he gave the corn)

Its super hard to leave em out - mine are still on the cold patio - its very cold this morning was down at around 35 outside!!
I went out on the patio - and the girls are peeping and moving around, so they don't seem to be as bothered by it all as I am!

(I gotta get me a feather coat)
