Do I need to buy chick grit for my baby chicks or can I use sand for then to eat almost 4 weeks old

I have 6 baby chicks that I bought from my pet chicken can I put sand in their brooder for them to eat instead of chick grit or do I have to give them chick Grit

If they are eating chick starter food there is no need to provide grit at the moment.

I don’t think it is a good idea to feed them sand. You can buy grit from a feed/farm store, or even get a handful of clean gravel or dirt and stick it in the brooder. They’d probably have tons and tons of fun in a pan of dirt, just as a side note.

Just save yourself time $$ and guesswork. Get some chick grit for them. A bag will last a long time, just save the bag for your next batch of chicks.

Your Cochin that burps(?) Is she drinking/eating o.k.? I would keep watch on her crop to see that it's emptying.

I agree. I don't give mine grit if their just getting chick feed but I'll also give mine scratch and that mixture that has meal worms in it. So I do throw them a handful of grit every once in a while!!

I start giving my chicks grit in week two.
They get nothing but crumble until then,
when I give them a chunk of sod and sprinkle chick sized grit on that.

I bought a 5# bag of 'adult grit' and ran it thru a colander with 1/8" holes in it.
Tedious?.... yeah, kinda maybe...but now I have some chick grit and adult grit that'll last for years.

If all that your chicks are getting to eat is chick starter they don’t need grit.
If your giving them any other types of foods they need grit to digest their food.

Yes, I have heard a chicken burp

I suppose it's the ER forum person in me. When someone says they have a chick/chicken burping, that usually spells T.R.O.U.B.L.E

Chicks are notorious for consuming bedding, paper towels, puppy pads, poop or whatever they can get a hold of, offering chick grit first thing helps them process these things, so you don't end of with burping, constipated chicks and ones with impacted crops.
