I live in NY - Dutchess County, and had someone ask if she could buy eggs. Can I sell farm eggs without any permit, or am I going to have someone getting me into trouble for not following state laws or something. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks - debby

The clear as mud answer is "It depends". Check with your state health, commerce and agricultural departments. And the county and town. (It's a pain, take a patience pill first.) A lot of the time you can find that info online.

As an example, if I sell eggs here in SC, from my property, it's pretty loose. But if I sell them at the farmer's market, I have to have new cartons with specific info on the labels and maintain them at certain temps. And to sell them to a store, for resale? Not worth the hassle!

I used to take them to people at work and folks at the vet clinic. We just didn't mention the regulations, but I was VERY careful about refrigeration, labeling and only the freshest.
