Do I need to Quarantine chicks?

I have antibotics on hand, but I dont have cocci meds. Where can I get those? Would my local TSC or Agway have them?

They should have. It's Amprolium and Sulmet that are most recommended.

A good resources on cocci is: http://compepid.tuskegee.edu/syllabi/pathobiology/pathology/avianmed/chapter7.html if your not familar with what your watching for.

Thank you for the link. I have been looking at their poop to make sure there is no blood, and its normal. I also am keeping a close eye on my chicks. So I will quarantine the chicks. Now I just need to find a large box to quarantine them in. I will check TSC and Agway this weekend. I guess that I should have it on hand just incase.

I just now saw this thread and have red flags going up all over! My answer to your question is YES! YES! YES! A small, 6 day old chick is what made my flock so sick this past summer. It was stuck in with my newly hatched chicks and then my whole flock of 50 chickens got sick. I lost a total of 17 chicks and teens due to the illness. PLEASE quarantine anything that comes into your flock, big or small. It is simply not worth the consequences.

I just now went through and read the whole post. I see where Farmer Kitty mentioned my nightmare. I cannot stress enough to anyone the importance of quarantining new birds. I have people who PM all of the time asking for help and advice because they did not quarantine, like me, and are dealing with their flock having Coryza. Boy it is heartbreaking to see and to hear. I've also seen where you do plan on quarantining now. You need to make sure that the chicks are not housed anywhere near your other birds and always tend to the chicks last. You don't want to cross contaminate any of your chickens that you have now. Just FYI and good luck with you new babies!

SundownWaterfowl's flock doesn't have cocci. Just passing info on as she is getting new chicks and is watching them in quarentine.

The meds in the medicated feed are only a prevention type level. They will not treat!
