OH ANNE!!! I'm so sorry! What a terrible thing to have happen. Though, from everything you've told us, I have a hard time believing that it was a deliberate act on Rhett's part. He seems to be so attentive and responsive to your girls. I know you're probably searching your heart right now and trying to decide if this was preventable. I doubt it. Accident prevention of this nature is virtually nonexistent. Sometimes, accidents just happen.
You also mentioned at the beginning of this adventure, that some of your girls are getting up there in age? Was this particular girl one of your older ones? Might it be that all of the excitement, coupled with a wrong way attempt at mating, was just a bit too much excitement for the poor dear? It could be as simple as a conspiracy of circumstance and coincidence you know.
You are probably having some serious reservations right now about letting him back in with the girls. And who could blame you? Surely not me! But I really do hope that you'll give him one more chance before you show him the door. He is such a beautiful creature, and so obviously in love with your girls. I'd hate to see both of you loose out on all of the joys of having a rooster around on account of a freak accident.
Though I'll be honest. My experiences with roosters has been limited to the last six or seven months. I've never encountered a situation like this. I could be completely wrong in advocating forgiveness and second chances. You probably should get more feed back from other, more experienced members, before you make a decision.
Please keep us posted.
ETA: I completely missed the second page of posts somehow. Upon further review, and bowing to the superior knowledge of Cynthia and Cetawin, (among others) perhaps the best thing is for him to pack his little rooster bags and hit the road. Now I'm beginning to wonder about his previous history and how he came to show up in your neighborhood. Perhaps someone else had bad experiences with him, but just couldn't bring themselves to toss him in the freezer so to speak.
Again, so very, very sorry for your loss. Dellies are such sweet and gentle birds. Which I suppose makes Rhett's crime all the more offensive.
So very sad. He held such promise as being a dream roo.
