Mine do it when they're excited about something. They do it for sexual reasons too. My drakes and ducks do it, usually it's male and female, but sometimes my ducks do it to each other. I think it's part dominance also.

I love watching Daphne and the Goons when they get all worked up about something - usually when they first get let out and they’re excited to explore. The ‘Scovies do their typical ‘Scovy dance and Daphne does her own Mallard-derived thing (more of a head down and side to side movement). They all dance in a circle for a minute or two and then enthusiastically head off on a great adventure together! I love that the movements (and corresponding quacks and trills) seem to be easily translated by the two very different breeds. I will have to get a video whenever decent weather returns.

Edited to add - The tail shake seems to be universal, although I feel like the ‘Scovies do it more often!
