Do my chickens have worms?

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and have only been keeping chickens for a year. I have 21 all together that are free range in 2 acres for a few hours a day and then kept in a large pen which is mainly bare earth. They are fed on layers pellets and their shelter is full of dust-extracted sawdust which I clean out once a week.

They have been wormed about 4 months ago using Flubenvet as they had tapeworm. Then yesterday when I was cleaning them out I removed the brooding hens briefly from their boxes so I could clean them out. I noticed quite a few teeny black flies buzzing in the sawdust there. Then when I went to leave the pen I saw three fresh poos with these yellow flecks in, could they be worm eggs? I have never seen anything like it before?

Feeling sorry for them and like I've let them down, please help :( Thank you so much.

I don’t think it is worms, it could just be something they found like a bug hideout, and the shells and things are what are left. Worms most of the time are white, so you would see long white strings:thumbsup

Thank you SO much for your response. I thought they might be some horrible worm
eggs and was feeling worried for them. Now I feel much better, thank you :)

Those are tapeworm segments. You'll need praziquantel to kill tapeworms, then redose 10 days later. Flubenvet is a good wormer for nematodes, but wont touch cestodes nor trematodes.

Hi Dawg,

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I and my chickens appreciate it so much.

I have googled tapeworm segments and I (sadly) think you're right but I have rung the local vets and they do not sell Praziquantel. Only Panucur? Do you think this will work, the lady I spoke to seemed to think so?

Thank you again so much, disappointing they have it as it seems rare in chickens but at least I can hopefully treat it.

Sophie
