Do my hens have to have constant feed when free ranging

Yeah i have a feeder but i only put like pound and a half in it at a time and i dont touch the

Get used to checking the "In the back" on a very regular basis. This is where you will probably first discover any mite, lice problems, along with prolapsed vent, being egg bound, pasty butt, gleet, and a few other things. The "In the back" area is where those eggs come from, and must be kept healthy to keep the hen healthy, and continue getting good healthy eggs.
 
BTW, yes keep a feeder with feed for them constantly, and when you see that they are laying, put some oyster shell in a separate spot near the food for them to eat as they choose.
