Do my little chicks need a perch to stand on?

I use a bit of log that I find in our woods behind the house. I think it helps develope muscle and coordination plus they love playing King Of The Hill. lol

I would really appreciate pictures also. I just stuck a mirror in my brooder box and a couple small wood blocks for something to jump on. Not sure about a perch though. I wonder how they would like a toilet paper roll?

Does anyone else have any pictures, ideas on how to implement the roost for the little chickies? For some reason, I'm just having a hard time implementing the idea which I think is wonderful!

We are new to chicks and loving it. They are so fun to watch. We are using an old bird cage for the brooder (18”x12”x30”) with a perch in it. Working out well. Today ( chicks 14 days old) they flew up and sat on the perch. Happy girls.

A roost or perching pole for baby chicks is a very good way to give them some much needed exerciser. Say that you are brooding in a heavy cardboard box, poke a roost or perching stick through both sides or all sides of the box and hang your poles there, but install them only high enough that the peeps can't easily walk under it. This forces them to hop onto or over the perching pole multiple times each day in their trips back-and-forth in the brooder. There is no way to tell for sure but I think that a well muscled and coordinated chick may just be able to flee from and evade predators better than the spoiled, nicker wearing, Little Fauntleroy chickens are able to do.

This is just a round piece of wood screwed into to blocks on the end for a little elevation.
