Do old hens mate?

He might. I'm trying to remember if I've seen my two old girls be mounted last fall before they stopped. I don't think I ever did, but obviously I'm not out there every minute.

I don't know, as none of mine are old enough to stop laying.
But when there are pullets that haven't started laying, hens that are raising chicks, or hens that are molting, my rooster doesn't mate with them. So I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't.

My roosters have giant flocks full of young, fertile hens, they don't have to chose between celibacy and breeding with old ladies. They can ve as picky as they want and still make chicks

Fair point, while I don't have as large of a flock as some of you, most of my hens are young, but he still breeds the older ladies, just not as regularly

If he's a good cockbird, he will not be mating a non laying hen.
