Do Orpingtons thrive in heat and humidity?

Thank you megalomaniac for your reply! I just found out last night that our offer was accepted! We are the proud new owners of a 22 acre hobby farm with a large barn and many outbuildings! I will be in the market for Orps in a few months, I am so excited! Now I'm just trying to narrow down which color varieties I want to start with lol

Green acres is the life for me!

Congratulations!

I would suggest getting a variety of breeds to see which ones you like best. And it is nice to have lots of color.

Do you just like the looks of Orpingtons? Or do you want chickens for eggs and meat?

I have grown up with Wyandottes, barred and Plymouth rocks, cochins, Rhode islands and delewares.

I fell in love with Orps, they suit my goals and personality. I raised them for 2 years then had to move cross country so I'm just getting back into my favorite breed. I am going to try a few other breeds at some point but money is tight after buying the farm so I'm eager to put every dollar towards my favorite for now.

I have so much more land and buildings to work with I will certainly be trying out other breeds I've never had before and would be open to any suggestions on fun breeds to work with!I have been researching less popular breeds that need conservation as well.

If you want eggs and a breed that is hardy, I would suggest Leghorns. They can get away from predators pretty well. I think Brown Leghorns are good. You will have all the eggs you want.

I don't need eggs too terribly. We are only a family of three but lots of neighbors I might be able to sell to and my needs might grow. Thanks for the tip! I just have to share some pics of our farm.

It looks like a lot of space for animals. I like the porch also. :)

Thanks guys! We are so thrilled! 22 acres is more than we ever dreamed of finding! More than we will ever need! I will not be limited in varieties and breeds of chickens I want to try but I am determined to pace myself. I want to be able to do justice to each breed and improve not just have them. Quality over quantity

I love the porch also! And the barn has five 10X10 horse stalls! Three of which will become coops with runs outside.

I just moved to Mississippi. I would love to have Orpingtons. I can't find many breeders around me. Is there a reason? I've been told they don't do well in heat and humidity so I'm trying to research this before I commit to buying any. Thanks!
I live in Texas and it's pretty hot and humid here though I doubt it's as humid as Mississippi nevertheless I have a buff Orpington hen in my mixed flock and she comes through the summer with flying colors though I do put a box fan out for them and ensure they have plenty of water but that is common knowledge
