do pullets raise their hackle feathers?

Anyone ever see pullets raise their hackle feathers when having a stand off with another chick or do only roosters do that?

Yes, my pullets did it frequently, to establish the pecking order. Sometimes they'd bump chests too. Now that it's all sorted out, they don't do it much anymore.

Every time I mess with my broody buff Orpington, she fluffs up like an orange beach ball.

I had a couple of hens that would puff up at me so I used rooster-red's Rooster reform on a couple of bully hens. I would pick them up and hold them so they had to stay in my arms until I was ready to put them down. It worked.

I only have two pullet hopefuls out of my six chicks and I've seen them both raising their hackle feathers in the last couple of days and I thought they were roos too

My Japanese Buff Bantam hen has been raising her hackles for awhile now....she only does it when provoked by the other chickens (she is the lowest one of the pecking order because of her size, but she is feisty!) or sometimes if I walk up to her with my dark brown shoes, she will attack my shoe...it's very funny to watch! She has never acted aggressive towards anyone at all, otherwise.
