I think they get smart. They may be smart enough that if they see their buddy get trapped, they learn. I switch up the bait to make it irresistible. My most successful has been shrimp tails (left over from boiled shrimp) I know cat food is cheaper, but IMO, you have to make it so good they absolutely can't help themselves. I think there are too many that have been trapped and released, too many that get smart.
