Do Rhode Island Reds ever go broody?

I do believe that my RIR is going broody as well. She's about a year and a half old Production Red. I got her from Rural King Spring 2014. Up until now, she's been my main layer. But for the last 2 days, she's been hogging the nest and growling at me. This morning she was on the nest but did leave it to eat and drink and explore a little (we free range). But now she refuses to allow me to collect eggs and growls at me if I reach toward her. One plus though, she allows me to pet her now. :)

It's early October and I have a RIR that has decided to sit on 10 eggs now for about 3 days. My concern is will it not b to cold for her.

The ones I had didn't go broody until they were four to five years old and wouldn't set until July or later!

Crazy girls, I gotta love em.
Well that is why I am on here, I have one that was on the nest tonight when hubby went to check for eggs. I was like ohhhhhh no she's egg bound but she's not. So I put her on the roost with the others. Asked hubby to check on her early in the morning just to make sure she is OK since he gets up earlier than I do. Mins is also the age of yours and have never been broody. So odd.

Hi all, I now have my first Rhody going broody! I've got 1 Buff Orp rooster, 5 hens and 8 RRed hens. I hand fed the buffs and got the Reds from a group of 200. For some reason the Reds are sweeter than the Orps I raised. A couple of them dont mind me picking them up. Anyway, I got the Orps because they are known to be affectionate and broody. Well, the Reds beat them to it! She showed signs of wanting to sit on Friday evening when I pulled her out of the nesting box & put her on the roost. She again stayed Monday evening, so that time, I took the hint & left her there. I just wanted to see if she was serious. Its now Wednesday and she is still sitting! I am now planning to build a makeshift chicken tractor for the new ones coming! That'll give her privacy and the lil ones safety with an outdoor feel.
Looking forward to seeing how good a mother she ends up being. As well as how cute the chicks are from a Buff Orp daddy!

Rhode Island Reds have the potential to become broody just as any other chicken does!
I myself have a flock of Red Sex Links and Rhode Island Reds, most of them being RIR's.
I've had one hen for almost a year now, and she's not very old and is a broody. Her mother was a RSL and hatched her out, along with two other RSL-RIR mixes. We've had three more Red Sex Links go broody, and one of them is hatching eggs right now. Our last broody was a Rhode Island Red, but didn't do too well and wasn't a great mother- but managed to raise 6 chicks and hatch three of them.
We have another broody ( a RIR) and we're going to let her hatch a few eggs, too, I believe!

Just want to add that I have a Rhode Island Red, Lucky. I thought she went missing and I wasn't happy because she is our fav and my sons chicken :). But a couple of days passed and I heard the girls talking in with a weird voice, so I peaked out and there was Lucky, she had been resurrected. So from time-to-time that day I would peak out. I noticed her on the fence and hopped down and watched her jump into my old compost. So I went and took a peek and she let me know not to mess with her, but there she was and I could see a few eggs, I instantly knew she went broody. The next day I wanted to know how many she was sitting on, so I went out when she came up for food. I took a picture of them quickly, then later counted them. There were SIXTEEN eggs, this is her first time laying as she is only 5 months old. So, now I'm excited to see our #1 raise chicks, she does nothing but nurture those eggs. Very interested in seeing how these come out as she is a perfect looking RIR and the rooster a perfect silkie.

we've got a PR hen just entering her 3rd year and she decided to go broody a couple of months ago. we still haven't "broken" her, she still keeps trying to incubate some eggs. we may just break down and give her a couple so she can get it over with, as she is one of our better layers.

Well hello! I did a google search and this forum came up, I know I’m 3 yrs late buuuuut I have a good excuse - I’m new 😇

I have 20 RIRs, I’ve recently put three couples away for breeding but thus far I’m not seeing any go broody tho they’ve got great nests full of eggs!

I had two other hens escaping the runs to make nests and one insisting on being in the coop for hours. Naturally I thought “OOO BROODY!!” So when I found them I made one an adopted mom for one of my breeder hens clutch - she’s not sitting now, she’s no. 2 I thought was going broody and stop when out with these eggs, and no one Else seems to want to..... suggestions?

I can hardly believe that nature can’t override human intervention in some way .... 🤨
